Well guys the IR ( Jeff Carver, Allysa Miller, Ben Eistertz, Matt Khouri, and David Wicker)crew did a recon mission to Puerto Rico over Feb 12-26, 2014.
We stayed at the Aguadilla surf house, with host Tom Luker. He is a great surfer and incredibly knowledgeable. We spent most of our time surfing ruins and wildo. Those spots are unique because the normal ENE trade winds are side offshore and this allows for an all day surf option.
Our first week there we were greeted with a medium period NE groundswell. Buoys were pinging at 6ft @13 seconds. Good numbers for some solid chest to occasionally a foot overhead surf. We surfed this swell at ruins a nice walled up A frame reef break right at the entrance of wilderness. It gets it's name from a large brick structure in front of the wave. After this first swell event which lasted about 4 days we had a few down days before the next swell.
We all decided to head to the rainforest. We went to the waterfall in San Sebastián. Beautiful does not do this place justice! We climbed up rocks to jump off into clear pristine deep water so fun.
The next swell was a treat, a large NW mid period swell from a stalled cold front off the US east coast. This swell was large. 9ft at 12 seconds readings got up to 14 ft. Excellent swell. We surfed mainly wilderness for this swell. It was crowded so we would paddle down a ways to ease the crowd. Size would range from 9-12 ft on the face with plenty of power. Paddle outs were a feat in themselves. All In all PR was a great time had by good friends. Plenty of waves to go around and for a few guys this was the first time surfing reef. Allysa did a great job documenting this trip with pics, thank you so much :). Get out there and look around adventure is right around the corner.
Getting amped on this trip makes us excited to get back in Corolla at the surf shop, and get back to teaching surf lessons in 2014! Stay tuned for the next travel update from Ecuador.
